The following essential moving advice is based on over 50 years of helping people move houses. There’s much more to moving house than packing boxes and loading a truck, and even people who have moved often need a few pointers about making the process go smoothly.

The essential advice for moving house
Always:
- Complete your packing so it is ready for removal on your planned moving day.
- Pack and carry your personal documents and valuable items with you.
- Check your appliance guides to find out if they have to be transported in a specific position, especially washing machines and fridges.
- Clean and dry any outdoor furniture and tools before moving day.
- Check our list of items below that can’t be moved.
- Set reminders for key events in your calendar.
Never:
- Pack important documents into any box that will get loaded onto the truck or put into storage. Carry them with you.
- Pack jewellery or money into any box that will get loaded onto the truck or put in storage. Carry them with you.
- Pack or move perishable food. Once you know you’re moving, eat down your pantry and fridge and only replace items if essential. It’s better to restock after you have moved.
- Place too many items in drawers. People believe it’s a smart way to pack, but it often causes breakages. And never put breakables in drawers. They will break.
Goods we can’t transport
For safety and to prevent dangerous accidents, we cannot carry the items listed below. These items present risks of injury, damage, pests and contamination when transported in a moving truck. You will need to make different arrangements if you need these items moved. Contact us if you need advice.
